LILLY NEW ENGLAND- PLENARY SESSIONEXPLORING COOPERATIVE LEARNING BY DOING COOPERATIVE LEARNING
AGENDA
Random Organizing
- The purpose of this activity is to organize people randomly in order to encourage participants to meet and interact with new colleagues.Activity- We will line up using birthdays as the criteria for placement - month/day of birth starting with January 1 or 1/1 and ending with December 31 or 12/31. This activity will be carried out non-verbally. Any form of communication other than talking is permissible.
Think-Pair Share
- This activity is perhaps the most commonly used and most effective in cooperative learning. It can be used to introduce a topic, during a class to emphasize a concept or at the end of class to summarize the day's material and explore the students' comprehension of the material covered. It produces close to 100% student participation since one student is talking and the other is listening.Warm up Activity- Working in pairs interview each other. Suggested questions include: "Why are you attending the Lilly conference?", "What is your teaching or administrative background?", "What is your definition of cooperative learning?"
Required question-We would like you to answer one question for us: "What must occur during this workshop to leave you with the feeling that this was one of the best you have ever attended?".
Activity- Develop a list of benefits related to academics of the line up technique we have just completed to accomplish random organizing. How might this foster cooperative learning?
Cooperative Learning
- This activity will be done using groups of 4. Prior to the start of this exercise we will use a warm up activity which is intended to break the ice and encourage communication between group members.Warm up Activity- Finding things in common- We would like you to try to find five personal things common among all group members. These items cannot be related to work or the Lilly conference but must be of a personal nature, such as your favorite food or a place you have each visited. Please be as specific as possible.
Short presentation on the five elements of cooperative learning- Starting a subject by using a short lecture or other form of presentation to introduce the material to be studied is desirable. Interactive lectures may be used during a class to clarify difficult concepts or to help summarize different group findings.
Cooperative Learning Activity- Creating a new animal- Please refer to the group assignment sheet.
Summary Activity- Using the worksheet provided, each group will identify at which points they observed the five parts of cooperative learning during the exercise.
Quiz- Define cooperative learning as described by Johnson and Johnson and contrast with collaborative learning paradigms.
Collaborative Learning
- Time permitting we will use collaborative learning techniques to explore three questions concerning the use of cooperative/collaborative learning techniques at the college level.Random Organizing- part
2- Based upon the consensus of the group we can meet four other participants by reorganizing ourselves. This technique utilizes playing cards. Find three other people in the room who have the same card as you do. Ignore the suit, just use the face value of the card, i.e. all four aces or fives etc. You may help each other by using verbal as well as other forms of communication.Activity- Using a Round-Robin technique develop a list of the potential educational advantages of cooperative/collaborative learning techniques. In a Round-Robin exercise each member contributes one idea at a time moving around the group from member to member until each member's ideas have been exhausted.

- Using the Round-Robin method develop a list of potential problems which may arise when trying to implement cooperative learning in college courses.Whole group discussion
