CALCULATING PI-- NOT THE KIND YOU EAT

FIND THREE ROUND OBJECTS IN YOUR HOME, SUCH AS A PLATE, COFFEE CUP ROLL OF PAPER ETC.

1) Sketch the circumference of each object on a piece of paper. Label each of the circles to identify which object it came from.

2) Measure around the circumference of each circle with a piece of string or tape measure. Note the distance under each circle.

3) Measure the diameter (across the circle defined by the object through the center) of each object and note the results under the previous measurement.

4) Divide the two measurements, part two divided by part 3.

5) Place your results in a table with the headings Circumference (C), Diameter (D), quotient C/D

6) What would you conclude about your results?
