S.E.T.I.
(Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence)
*Project Phoenix (Http://www.phy.syr.edu)
What is S.E.T.I.? SETI is the search for extraterrestrial intelligence. It is a program aimed at discovering civilizations that may exist on other planets orbiting other stars. The program uses it's technology to detect life across interstellar distances.

Project
Phoenix
The goal of Project Phoenix is to find evidence of intelligence elsewhere in the universe. They search for radio signals from approximately 1,000 near, sun-like stars. This project is working with the equipment NASA had built. Through private funding they will continue the work NASA started but only finished 1/10 of because of the loss of government funding. Short -Term: 1.) Make use of the instrumentation from the terminated NASA program. 2.) Spend 5 months conducting observations of the southern sky using the Parkes 210 foot diameter radio telescope in Australia.
|
Long-Term:
1.) Use the Aerobic Radio Telescope in Puerto Rico (1,000 feet in diameter) 2.) Continue observing the stars using large blocks of observing time granted to the institute scientists. They will also begin using a smaller northern telescope with the necessary confirmation capabilities.

The Drake Equation: The Drake Equation is used to try to decipher the number of technologically advanced civilizations might exist in our galaxy. Each letter of the equation represents a certain aspect we believe is necessary by examining the life on our own planet. Usefulness of the Drake Equation: The Drake Equation is used to create the frame work for
understanding odds of a civilization like earth in other areas of the
galaxy. The numbers entered into the equation are by no means facts,
just educated guesses. It will also help you to think about what is
necessary in determining what is usefull in calculating the number of life
forms in other galaxies.
