For this research project, find out about the purpose of domain names on the web, research how they are created, and outline the steps necessary to get your own domain name. Finally, choose a domain names for your personal website and check to see if it is available.

  1. What is an internet domain name? Research why domain names are so important on the web. Describe what you found out in a sentence or two.
  2. Why do domain names have to be unique? What does it mean to "register" a domain names? If you wanted a domain name that is already taken, how could you get it?

how to Get your own name

  1. Research companies that will help you register a domain name of your very own? On average, how much does it cost (price per year) to register a domain name for a year? How about for ten years? How long can you keep the domain name?
  2. Decide on a domain name for your personal website. You might want to choose a name that is easy to remember and easy to type, or something particular to yourself and very unique.
  3. Use one of the companies that you discovered above to check to see if your domain name is available. Whether or not it is available, decide on two or three alternative domain names and check to see if they are available. Report on your findings?
