Color Project

For this research project, explore why different color combinations evoke different moods or suggest different personalities, identify an image or set of images that creates a particular mood or personality, and use these images to specify a color palette.

Record your research results on an appropriate titled page in your web portfolio in the reports section.

Color makes a Difference

Research the effects of color combinations on mood starting with a web search on color and mood. Draw from several different sources to explain how different color combinations affect mood. Be sure to include some discussion of:

    • the difference between "warm" and "cool" colors
    • how a color's effect can change depending on the other colors in the color palette
    • some examples of the cultural differences related to color and mood (why is white a poor color choice for a wedding dress in India?)

Find images that express a mood or personality

  1. Locate at least three images or sets of images that suggest a certain mood or personality (peace, tranquility, exciting, speed, harmony, unity, trust, confidence, conservatism, security, cleanliness, order, loyalty, earth, technology, depression). You might choose to explore a personality connected to your Personal Website Project.
  2. Choose at least one image or set of images from a non-electronic source (feel free to get all three of your images from these sources - a magazine cover, photographic print, afternoon sunset, cityscape, field of wildflowers, cereal box, comic strip, etc.) Scan or photograph the image to record it for this research project.
  3. Include each image or set of images in your Color Project report with a list of words that describes the mood or personality that the image suggests to you.

Create a color palette with personality

  1. For each image or set of images in your Color Project report, use a color sampler like color palette generator or Adobe Color to identify the key colors in the image's color palette.
  2. Create and name a color palette associated with each image or set of images.
