Assignment: Culture Map

For this assignment, students will create an idiosyncratic (personal) culture map. The assignment is designed to provide students with an opportunity to examine their personal culture and what influences their world view.
Minimum Requirements
- Create a graphic representation of your culture. In doing so, you should think about what is most influential and important in your life.
- While this should be primarily graphic in nature, some words are allowed.
- Create a single PowerPoint slide.
- Your culture map should include elements of the following:
- International culture
- National culture
- Regional culture
- Local culture
- Idiosyncratic culture
- Post your culture map to the appropriate discussion board.
- Post at least three comments to your classmates’ culture maps—these should say something substantial. Comments such as, “I liked your culture map” do not count towards your three comments. Consider such things as values and norms, culture change, similarities and differences (and why those are present), etc.
- Reply to at least one comment left on your culture map.

Learn Actively (5 points)
- recognize key elements of human culture and have a basic understanding of fundamental cultural anthropology concepts: student identifies key elements of their culture at and can identify them according to the various levels of culture
Communicate with Clarity and Originality (15 points)
- have begun to develop or improve your communication skills: student creates a visual representation of culture that “speaks for itself”
- be able to clearly express your thoughts about human culture and adaptive processes: culture map reflects student's world view clearly and concisely in a visual manner; student can identify commonalities and differences with other students
Think Critically, Creatively, and Reflectively (10 points)
- understand how to look at culture at various levels (individual, community, national) and from an anthropological perspective: student clearly includes elements of various cultural levels
- understand that while there are various ways of being human and we are each unique, we also share basic commonalities of experience and living: in-class student can identify commonalities with other students’ cultures and can provide possible explanations for both commonalities and differences; comments left on peer’s maps are substantial
