Week 7 - How are people adapting to globalization?

Overview: Globalization and development are explored this week. Particular attention is paid to the effects of development on indigenous peoples. Prior to reading about development, we look at the effects of European colonization on indigenous peoples and how it relates to modern economic development. At the end of the section you will:

• know the difference between modernization, development, and globalization
• recognize the lingering effects of European colonization
• understand decolonization processes and outcomes
• be familiar with the modern development program
• understand the role of the United Nations, World Bank, and IMF in modern development
• recognize the effects of modern development on indigenous peoples
• appreciate the origins and experience of the Zapatista
