Official Course Description: A mastery based intermediate course in algebra designed to help prepare students for college level math. Topics include: factoring and rational expressions, roots and radicals, Quadratic equations, graphs of nonlinear functions and conic sections, and the development of word problem analysis and solution. Letter grade or pass-fail

Purpose and Aims (Instructional Objectives): The course is designed to help prepare students for the study of college mathby developing mathematical skills and by building students' confidence in their math ability. The latter is accomplished by focusing on math as a written and spoken language, building linkages with student experiences and focusing on the critical thinking skills which are developed through the examination and use of application problems.

1. Instructional Methods: This course is scheduled 3 times a week in order to provide special learning activities required by students as they make the transition from arithmetic to algebraic reasoning. The class hours may be used for small group activities, individualized instruction, peer tutoring, or other activities which will lead to student interactions with the instructor and their peers.

2. Specific Evaluation and Grading Procedures (including intellectual skills): Comprehensive final exam successful at the 70% mastery level, chapter tests successful at the 80% mastery level, intellectial skills evaluated through the mastery approach.

3. Attendance Policy: Attendance is taken at each class to identify those students who are participating in the class procedures. Attendance is not mandatory. Students do not need to obtain excuses when they miss class. The importance of attendance is stressed by the instructor throughout the semester as the one of the most important indicators of success in math courses.

6. Supplemantary reading recommended but not required: Handouts are provided by the instructor and often include writing assignments and additional real world math problems to be worked in cooperative learning groups.
