BIT 143 Announcements:
Bonus Video: BST.Clone
Several people missed the BST.Clone method on
A4, and someone asked about it, so I thought
that I'd throw together this
video explaining one possible solution.

Audio Problems For Older Video Solved
Update (2008, May 21): You can
also upgrade to Version 10 (beta) of the
Flash Player, too, and that apparently
fixes the problem.
It looks like the problem with viewing
the older (and by older, I mean that it
was recorded fall term) Flash video file
is that the newest flash player is
garbling the audio playback. It
appears that this can be fixed (and
we've confirmed that this fix has worked
for at least one student) by downgrading
to a slightly older version of Flash
player. The most current version (as of
this writing) is 9.0.124.0. If you
downgrade to 9.0.47.0, then the audio
will work again. The computers
here at school will be left at their
current version, so make sure that you
watch the videos on your own computers.
How to downgrade the Adobe Flash Player:
- Click on Start
→ Control Panel
→ Add Or Remove Programs
- Within
that, select the Adobe Flash Player items,
and uninstall them.
- Download
and install the following file:
Handouts\flashplayer9r47_win.exe
(Adobe makes older versions available from
testing at
http://kb.adobe.com/selfservice/viewContent.do?externalId=tn_14266,
which is where the .EXE was obtained from)
- The older video files should now run ok.
You may find that certain websites will
force you to upgrade to the most recent
version of Flash before you can watch a
video/play a game/etc - you can do this, but
keep in mind you'll need to re-downgrade to
watch more videos for this class.
Why I *think* this is ok: You're downgrading
to another version of Flash Player 9, and I
selected the most recent version that still
works, so you shouldn't lose a lot of
functionality or open yourself to a lot of
security risks. I apologize for this
inconvenience!

Domain Name
Change
Cascadia Community College has recently received it's own, independent
accreditation (previous to that, it was operating by the accreditation and
oversight of another community college). As a result, we've now obtained a
top-level .EDU domain. Please note that instead of (for example)
mpanitz@cascadia.ctc.edu,
it's now mpanitz@cascadia.edu

Help for people
doing homework at Cascadia
The various file servers here at Cascadia have been
experiencing some instability, and it looks like we may be
experiencing more in the future. I've put together
a
document detailing some strategies & tricks for continuing
to work productively, despite the outages.
Interesting Interviewing Page
Slashdot has an interesting meta-article on interviewing in the high-tech
industry. Definitely interesting reading.
There are a ton of books available to you, as Cascadia students, for free,
through Safari Books Online. Safari has books from publishers such as
O'Reilly, and is way cool. Here's the URL:

Also, some people have had trouble using the Safari Books Online. Hopefully,
this document will clear up any problems.
Interesting article by Charles Petzold
The title is 'Does
Visual Studio Rot The Mind?' - definitely a worthwhile
read, and makes a lot of good points. Also has some
interesting tidbits on upcoming Windows changes.
