Week I Chapter 21:
28 September - 2 October (Weekend of 3-4 October):
*Chapter 21 - Progressivism from the Grass Roots to the White House, 1890-1916: Map Activity 1 & Map Activity 2
- Progressivism: Exactly what defined "progress"?
- How would you define Reform Darwinism, Social engineering?
- Roosevelt and The Square Deal.
- Roosevelt v Taft.
- How do you define the "Liberal State"?
N.B. Your citation exercise is due at the end of next week.
Week II Chapter 22:
5 October - 9 October (Weekend of 10-11 October)
*Chapter 22 - WWI: The Progressive Crusade at Home and Abroad: Map Activity 1 & Map Activity 2
- Think about how Wilson dealt with international politics and US neutrality.
- There were many casualties of the First World War - not only lives lost, but the a fundamental shift in perspective. Be prepared to discuss this.
- How about population shifts and the upheaval of labor?
- How did the US view Bolshevism?
- Think about President Wilson's Fourteen Points; what did he intend to accomplish?
- Think about Senate Republicans' objection to the League of Nations
N.B.    First citation exercise is due by week's end. Begin thinking about possible paper topics; topic selection/outline due 15-16 October.
*Week III Chapters 23 - 24:
12 - 16 October (Weekend of 17-18 October)
*Chapter 23: From New Era to Great Depression, 1920-1932: Map Activity 1 & Map Activity 2
- Think about What Calvin Coolidge's philosophy of government was and how was it expressed?
- The US and its retreat into isolationism
- The automobile industry in the 1920s and its role in shaping american life.
*Chapter 24 - The New Deal Experiment, 1932-1939:
- How did personal circumstances combine with larger political events to make Franklin Roosevelt a successful politician?
- Why do you think Governor Roosevelt thought that he had a chance to win the presidency in 1932?
- How did the election of 1932 change the American political landscape?
N.B.    EXAM I is COMING UP (15 - 17 Oct). Also, don't forget to work on your Citation Exercise corrections and hand in your topic selection.
*Week IV Chapters 24 - 25:
19 - 23 October (Weekend of 24 - 25 October)
*Chapter 24 (continued) - The New Deal Experiment, 1932-1939: Map Activity 1 & Map Activity 2
- How did the election of 1932 change the American political landscape?
*Chapter 25 - The United States and the Second World War, 1939-1945
- Think about the forces that helped to shape President Roosevelt's isolationist stance in the 1930s, e.g. Japan, Italy, and Germany.
- Think about the Good Neighbor Policy and US-Latin American relations
- Why do you think there was increasing military expansion in 1936 - what was going on?
N.B.    Your topic selection/outline was due last weekend. If you were granted an extension, get it in with your rough draft by this weekend.
